Sooraj Subramaniam – Dancer and Tutor
Sooraj Subramaniam began his dance training at the Sutra Dance Theatre, Malaysia, learning the Indian classical dance styles of Bharatanatyam and Odissi, and later on classical ballet and contemporary dance forms. He continued classical ballet training in Australia, and qualified with an Advanced Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance) at the Western Australian Academy for Performing Arts. Concurrently, he co-directed Mudhra Dance Company based in Perth, Western Australia, teaching and performing Indian classical and contemporary dance.
Since 2007 Sooraj has been working with London-based Srishti – Nina Rajarani Dance Creations. He has been featured in their productions of Jham! (2013 -15), Love Is In The Air (2010 -11), These Are a Few of My Favourite Things (2010), My Stamping Ground (2009) and Playball (2008). As well as being a full-time performer, Sooraj was the principal dance tutor and workshop leader for Srishti until 2012.
Additionally, Sooraj has performed various classical and contemporary repertoire for Akademi, Balbir Singh Dance Company, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance and Sampradaya (Canada). In 2009 Sooraj added Kathak to his training with Urja Desai Thakore, London, and includes this style in his professional repertoire.
He performed his own contemporary work, Nocturne, for Resolution! 2011 at The Place, London.
Sooraj recently has relocated to Belgium but continues to work with the company.
