In partnership with the Metropolitan Police and the Harrow Youth Crime Prevention Team, Srishti will be delivering a 10 week project each year for 3 years in each of the boroughs of Harrow and Brent, focussing on knife crime prevention through creative activities. The project is funded by the Home Office Community Fund and will use dance and music workshops to debate gang culture with young people. The target participants for these projects will be BME males aged 8-13.
As well as teaching the basic skills of South Asian dance and music, the tutors, with the help of a facilitator, will use their art forms as communication tools to create scenarios for the young people to discuss, alter and challenge stereotypes around gangs. The project aims to create debate without argument, and to steer young people into their own self-discovery.
At the end of the 10-week period the groups will create their own piece of work using these scenarios as inspiration and will present this work to one another and to friends and families.
