About the ISTD
The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) is the world's leading dance examinations board.
Formed in 1904, it is today a registered educational charity and is the only organisation that covers the full spectrum of dance examinations on a global scale.
The ISTD's chief objective is to educate the public in the art of dancing in all its forms.
The examination structure of the ISTD is designed to cater equally for those pursuing dance purely as a leisure activity and for those who wish to progress to making dance their profession, either as a performer or dance teacher.
ISTD Grade examinations (Grades 1-6) are accredited by Ofqual, the regulator of qualifications, exams and tests in England.
The ISTD South Asian Faculty was set up in 1999 to examine in Bharatanatyam and Kathak. The syllabus has evolved over several years of research, and represents the corporate view of distinguished dance gurus throughout the UK. The syllabus taught by the ISTD aims to preserve and develop the rich traditions of the dance while adapting to the many different cultures and contexts in which they are now practised.
