Jham! is a fresh, youthful, contemporary dance and music work built on firm classical ground. The performance brings together the rhythmic, vocally percussive South Indian solkattu or syllabic recitation which is often an accompaniment to dance as well as a vocal style in it’s own right, with the immediately familiar modern stye of beatboxing, most often associated with hip-hop dance and music.
The title Jham! is one of the rhythmic syllables used in dance recitation, and also alludes to the idea of a musical jam – a feeling of improvisation and collaboration, the musicians and dancers working off one another to produce something new and exciting. This upbeat, playful and energetic work highlights the rhythmics play between the ancient and the modern.
